Product Description
Not only does this product repel insects, but will actually kill ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers, mites and more than 55 other kinds of insects. Sawyer® Permethrin repellent is for use on your clothing, tents and other gear. A single application lasts through 6 washings. Permethrin is odorless when dry. During the drying process it tightly bonds with the fibers of the treated garment. It will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your outdoor gear. Try our easy-to-use treatment methods: military-style soak system and the NEW 24 oz trigger spray. These methods provide protection from mosquitoes and ticks through 6 washings. Permethrin clothing treatments, when applied following Directions for Use, have been determined to have "spatial repellency" against mosquitoes. This means that mosquitoes will swarm around you, but not light on your treated clothing and bite. Also use an EPA registered repellent, such as the Sawyer® microencapsulated Controlled Release 20% DEET, on all exposed skin for further protection from biting and blood sucking mosquitoes. The combination of Permethrin on clothing and DEET repellent on skin forms an "Insect Repellent System." When used as directed on the EPA registered labels, the Insect Repellent System will provide the best protection from biting, blood sucking and disease carrying insects. A well known study conducted by Tom Lillie, Carl Schreck and A. J. Rahe in Alaska in 1987, showed 99.9% effectiveness against mosquitoes biting at a rate of more than 1,100/hr. This protection is far greater than either a DEET based insect repellent or Permethrin can achieve alone.

3 out of 5 stars Permethrin is a neurotoxin   August 21, 2010

People who want to be extra careful about their existing neurological problems might want to know that permethrin kills insects because it is a neurotoxin. It is not known to harm people but cats are particularly sensitive to its misapplication as a flea treatment. Its a flea treament for dogs for whom its ok.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, no Ticks   August 19, 2010

I live on the side of a mountain in Northern AL. I don't have a lawn - more of a natural forest look in both the front and back of the house.

Lawn care for me is getting rid of the weeds that are always a problem. In the past I would walk trough the yard and end up with one or two ticks on me. If I decided to work - actually kneeling and pulling weeds - I have come in with six to eight ticks.

I purchased the perimethrin spray hare at Amazon. Sprayed my shoes, socks, jeans, and long sleeve shirt (really hot in 99F heat). I keep them just for working outside. I have spent a total of 20 hours in the weeds - kneeling - actually laying down in the weeds to recover from the heat - and not a single tick.

I now swear by this product.

4 out of 5 stars Save money by applying insect repellent yourself   August 12, 2010

Buying a shirt or pair of slacks that has the bug repellent added will also add $20 per item to it price. Instead get a bottle of permethrin and dilute it and apply it with a small garden sprayer to saturate the clothes you want to take and then let them air dry. The higher the concentration the more washings before the permethrin is completely removed from your clothes. The Sawyer kit with the solution pre-diluted and the trigger spray is an easy way to go though the solution will only be good for 6 washings at most. This is more than adequate for use when traveling but not for clothing you will be wearing a good deal over a period of many weeks.

I used $10 worth of permethrin to treat all my clothing and my wife's for trips to Asia and Central America. With this approach you can pick the clothing you want to wear and treat it instead of being limited to what is sold by the travel sites. It also means you can treat socks and scarves as well as tops and pants. DEET is tough on clothing so it is better to use the permethrin solution on your clothing and only apply the DEET to your face, neck, hands, and feet.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Cambodia in the temple areas where the mosquitoes were thick in the air and during that entire time neither of us had a single mosquito bite. The permethrin also is effective for ticks, midges, chiggers, ants, and flys.

With the resistant malaria strains and Lyme disease and encephalitis concerns it is best to be proactive and permethrin sprayed onto clothing is an excellent first step.

5 out of 5 stars Does the JOB on bugs and safe to use   August 8, 2010

This is the best product for treating clothes and outdoor gear.
LIQUID SAWYERS IS POISONOUS TO CATS! I have three cats and will not let them contact this material when wet. NOT HARD to do...BE CAREFUL>>>
I use gloves and clear glasses when handling this
I use three of these in a large, 20 gallon, bucket
I give a good bit of water to mix the solution.
I make sure the pants, socks, shirts, BUFFs, bandanas and most any article of clothing I'll be wearing in the outdoors is completely, thoroughly and UTTERLY soaked with the solution.
I wring the clothes as best I can by hand
I put the clothes on a line outside to dry...as a bone
I soak OUTDOOR GEAR like stuffsacks, hammocks, webbing. If I tented I would soak the nylon tent and fly.

When all is soaked I paint with brush or roller. Even a pressure spray tank is good to use the diluted mixture of permethrin to treat for bugs outside on the walk way, patio, around doors and windows. I spray this in the basement and around the foundation of the house.
NONE OF THE USED INSECT TREATMENT IS TOSSED AWAY. Use it till there's no more.

This stuff works great!
Tom

5 out of 5 stars Worked Great- Easy to Apply   August 6, 2010
Jack Rothman (NY USA)
I used this stuff on my clothes before I went to East Africa. I took my clothes out in the backyard and hung them on a rack. I sprayed them carefully, wearing disposable gloves. It will dribble onto your hand as you spray. I let the clothes dry and wore them for our entire trip. I had no mosquito bites and there is no smell or irritation. On my skin I used Sawyers Premium 20% Picariden spray which completed the mosquito shield. If you're going into dense mosquito laden areas with malaria, I highly recommend these products.
