The Gerber Combo Axe II with Saw features an axe with a hollow handle into which a saw fits. Gerber made the axe handle out of nearly indestructible glass-filled nylon, so it's lightweight and durable. This handle is long for improved striking force and has a textured rubber coating to keep your hands glued to it for safe chopping.  Great hatchet for camping and basic survival kit September 6, 2010

We just used this hand axe this weekend on a backpacking trip and I am very impressed with the design and function. The axe feels solid and nicely balanced and yet light. I used it to split some 2" diameter branches to carve into spoons (we forgot all our cooking and eating utensils). The hollow nylon handle has a more grippy overmold where you lay your fingers. The saw is wicked sharp and sliced through branches quickly. It was less suitable for slicing bread (we had it along and thought it was worth a try!). I plan to leave this in the trunk of the car when not using it on rafting and canoeing trips. I also used it at home to split some 2x lumber into kindling and it was just the right size for that. If you also carry a leatherman or knife, this axe and saw combination is a good complement to your kit and doesn't overlap the functions of those tools. Good choice to add to a basic survival kit. Highly recommended.

Great Quality, very sharp and very light. I put it in my truck because I dont want to be anywhere without it. Im very suprised with how well it works and how durable it is. This thing will last a lifetime.

The workmanship is not as good as Gerber Camp Axe which is made in Finland. Returned the Combo Axe II and got the Camp Axe instead.

I bought this axe about a year ago and the head broke off of the handle it's first day of use on a camping trip 50 miles from anywhere. I fell for the saw blade in the handle gimmick and I think that's exactly why this product failed so quickly. Instead of a nice solid handle made of fiberglass or hickory you get a hollow tube. The saw is pretty useless as well. This tool was not build for the grind, but it might be nice if you need to do some light weeding in your back yard. If you need an axe you can rely on this is not it.

As an avid hiker and camper I am a big believer in being well prepared for just about anything one can imagine getting into deep in the wilderness. Knives, saws, axes, are all part of any real wilderness excursion preparedness list. One can get by with some kind of "do all" camp or hunting knife if need be, but tools specifically designed for being carried into the mountains can at the very least make your excursion a much more congenial experience, and at the most maybe save your life.
This fine Gerber camp axe and saw set is a rarity among hiking equipment. Its easy to locate each or either, but as a combo set there are very few choices for some reason. This Gerber set is a top quality item in my opinion. The solid stainless steel axe head sharpens nicely, and the handle is made of a tough polyamide with a hard rubberized cover. Its very strong, but surprisingly light. The saw also has a very comfortable handle and a definite no nonsense cutting blade. Make no mistake about it, this combo set is really not made for camping in the wilds of ones back yard. Its more of a muscle set designed for some serious hiking where one might have the need of a real quality axe that can take some abuse, and a saw blade that will stand up to some hard core cutting if need be. Both the axe and the saw came very sharp to begin with, and can even be made more finely honed if one wants to take the effort. The holster that comes with the set is very sturdy, mounts easily on your person, and holds the axe in a comfy position. Everything about this set is quality made and is not for decoration only. It will stand up to years of tough use on many a genuine wilderness excursion.
If I had to place any negative at all on this set, I would have to agree with the other reviewer here that stated that the axe at 15" overall is just a little too long for practical handling and carrying along on a hike. The saw blade that fits snugly inside the axe handle is a little better sized at 10 1/4" overall, but I would have liked to see both knocked down another couple of inches. There is another axe combo set available by Gerber that is one step down from this one, but unfortunately it is a good 4 inches shorter overall and a little on the meager side. Something in between would be nice. However the overall length of this set is certainly not a reason to reject this fine quality combo that is very reasonably priced here on Amazon. (Personally I wish I had seen it here first and saved myself some money. I got mine from LL Beans and paid quite a bit more). If you do any serious hiking or camping I highly recommend this Gerber combo. It is a top quality outfit for the price that will last you decades if well taken care of...
